The uniform

The Admiral wears a dark blue naval coat edged in gold lace, gold epaulettes, a white cravat and a black bicorne trimmed with gold: the two-cornered hat that naval officers wore from the 1790s through the age of sail.

Behind the Admiral, a grey sea is working itself into a storm and the rigging of a sailing ship climbs out of the frame. The clouds and the waves are painted fresh for every portrait, so no two skies are the same.

Who it suits

For the dog who cannot pass a lake, a puddle or a full bathtub without an inspection. Labradors, retrievers, spaniels and Newfoundlands are natural flag officers. So is any cat who watches the fish tank like a horizon.

Questions about The Admiral

Does the hat hide my dog’s ears?

The bicorne sits on top of the head, so part of the ears is usually under the hat, as it would be in life. The face is never covered. If you would rather see the whole head, The General and The Colonel are bareheaded.

Is the ship in the background of every Admiral?

Yes: a grey sea and the rigging of a sailing ship. The exact clouds and waves are painted fresh for each portrait.

Can I see The Admiral on my pet before I pay?

Yes. Add a photo, choose The Admiral and your preview is ready in about a minute. Previews are free, with a daily limit per visitor.

Does my pet’s name appear on the canvas?

No. The name you type appears on the wall label next to your preview, as a museum would caption it. The canvas carries the portrait only.

Does the canvas come framed?

It comes stretched over solid wood bars, 1.25 in deep, with the picture mirrored around the edges and a sawtooth hanger attached. It needs no frame: one nail and it is up.

How long does delivery take?

Printing takes 2 to 3 business days, and US delivery 1 to 5 business days after that. You get a tracking link by email when your canvas ships. Digital files are ready to download right after payment.

Can I return my portrait?

Each portrait is made for one pet, so we can’t take returns for a change of mind. If your canvas arrives damaged or misprinted, email us a photo within 14 days and we will reprint it free.
