The name has stuck to a whole family of pictures: a pet dressed as a noble, lit from one side against a dark ground, painted the way court painters painted people. Strictly speaking, they borrow from several centuries at once.
Our Duchess and Queen wear the ruff and the standing lace collar of the late Renaissance, roughly 1560 to 1630. Our General, Admiral and Colonel wear the dress uniforms of the Napoleonic years, two centuries later. The Princess belongs to the pastel boudoirs of the 1700s.
What they share is the manner: the texture of oil paint, visible brushwork, soft light from one side, and a sitter who looks faintly unimpressed.

No brush touches the canvas. The artwork is created by AI image tools from your photo, in the style of a classical oil portrait, and then printed as a giclée on archival canvas. That is why it takes a minute rather than a month, and why it costs what it does.
If what you want is an original oil painting by a human hand, commission a painter: it is a different object, at a different price. Our guide to AI and hand-painted pet portraits compares the two plainly.

The Duchess. Her pleated ruff, pearls and jewelled cap are straight out of the late 1500s. The Queen, with her standing lace collar, is a close second.
No. It is an image made with AI in the style of an oil portrait, printed on canvas. The canvas has a real woven surface, but the brushwork is part of the picture, not paint you can feel.
One where your pet faces the camera in good light, with both eyes visible. Phone photos are fine. Blurry, dark or far-away photos give weaker portraits.
Then don’t order. Try another title or another photo instead. Previews are free, with a daily limit per visitor.
It comes stretched over solid wood bars, 1.25 in deep, with the picture mirrored around the edges and a sawtooth hanger attached. It needs no frame: one nail and it is up.
