The gown
The Duchess wears midnight blue velvet, a white lace ruff, pearl earrings and a small jewelled cap, in front of dark plum drapery. The ruff, a pleated collar worn all over Europe between about 1560 and 1630, frames the face like a plate. Portrait painters loved it for that, and it flatters anyone with whiskers.
It is the quietest of our six portraits: cool colors, soft light, a great deal of composure.
Who it suits
For the quiet aristocrat: the cat on the highest shelf, the greyhound on the sofa, the senior dog who has seen it all and said nothing.
Grey, silver, blue and tabby coats sit beautifully in the cool palette, and the white ruff lifts a dark face. No dressing up is needed: send an ordinary photo and the gown is painted around your pet’s own head.

Questions about The Duchess
Do I need to dress up my pet?
No. Send an ordinary photo. The costume is painted around your pet’s own head and face; nobody has to wear a ruff.
Can I order two portraits as a pair?
Yes. Each portrait shows one pet, so a household of two orders two canvases. The Duchess hangs well beside The Queen or The Admiral in the same size.
Does The Duchess suit a dog?
Yes. She was made with sighthounds, senior dogs and any dignified face in mind, and the portrait is painted for whichever animal is in your photo.
Does my pet’s name appear on the canvas?
No. The name you type appears on the wall label next to your preview, as a museum would caption it. The canvas carries the portrait only.
Does the canvas come framed?
It comes stretched over solid wood bars, 1.25 in deep, with the picture mirrored around the edges and a sawtooth hanger attached. It needs no frame: one nail and it is up.
How long does delivery take?
Printing takes 2 to 3 business days, and US delivery 1 to 5 business days after that. You get a tracking link by email when your canvas ships. Digital files are ready to download right after payment.
Can I return my portrait?
Each portrait is made for one pet, so we can’t take returns for a change of mind. If your canvas arrives damaged or misprinted, email us a photo within 14 days and we will reprint it free.
