The uniform

The General is painted in full dress: a dark navy coat with a high collar embroidered in gold, heavy bullion epaulettes on both shoulders, braided gold cords looped across the chest, a red silk sash and two brass medals. It is the dress of a senior officer of the early 1800s, the years when an army still put on its finest coat to sit for a painter.

The background is a deep olive green, the plain studio backdrop portrait painters of the period favored. Nothing competes with the face, and the gold stays in front.

Who it suits

For the one who patrols the yard, supervises every delivery and has never once backed down from the vacuum cleaner. The General suits dogs with a broad chest and a steady stare (Shiba Inus, shepherds, retrievers, bulldogs) and any cat who runs the household by glare alone.

Dark coats and light coats both read well against the olive background. A photo taken at your pet’s eye level, facing the camera, gives the General the right bearing.

Questions about The General

Will The General look like my pet?

That is the point. The portrait is painted from your photo: the same breed, the same markings, the same eyes and ears. You see it before you pay, and if the likeness is not there you can try another photo for free.

Can I change the color of the coat or the sash?

Not for now. Each title has one costume, painted the same way every time, so what you see in our samples is what your pet will wear.

Can a female pet be The General?

Of course. Titles are honorary, and rank has nothing to do with it.

Does my pet’s name appear on the canvas?

No. The name you type appears on the wall label next to your preview, as a museum would caption it. The canvas carries the portrait only.

Does the canvas come framed?

It comes stretched over solid wood bars, 1.25 in deep, with the picture mirrored around the edges and a sawtooth hanger attached. It needs no frame: one nail and it is up.

How long does delivery take?

Printing takes 2 to 3 business days, and US delivery 1 to 5 business days after that. You get a tracking link by email when your canvas ships. Digital files are ready to download right after payment.

Can I return my portrait?

Each portrait is made for one pet, so we can’t take returns for a change of mind. If your canvas arrives damaged or misprinted, email us a photo within 14 days and we will reprint it free.
